MTD does not apply to you
This is one of the possible outcomes of the MTD eligibility checker. For a year-precise calculation that combines self-employment, UK property, and foreign property income, use the year-precise checker.
MTD does not apply to you
Making Tax Digital is a UK HMRC initiative. Since you are not based in the United Kingdom, you are not required to comply.
Information only. Tax rules change. Verify against HMRC's MTD guidance and consult a qualified UK accountant for personal advice. The full logic behind this result is on the methodology page.
Outside the UK
- 1Making Tax Digital is HMRC-specific. Other countries (US, Australia, EU, India) have their own digitalisation programmes with different rules.
- 2If you have UK rental property or UK self-employment income declared on a UK SA return, that UK-source income may still pull you into UK MTD.

What this result means
Why UK MTD does not normally apply
Making Tax Digital is a UK HMRC programme. If you are not based in the UK and do not have income that is reported on a UK tax return, this checker result is usually the end of the UK MTD question. Other countries may have their own digital reporting rules, but they are separate from HMRC's MTD for Income Tax and MTD for VAT.
When to re-check
Re-check if you receive UK rental income, trade in the UK as a sole trader, become a partner in a UK business, or register for UK VAT. Non-residence alone does not always remove a UK filing obligation, especially where the income source is in the UK. The qualifying income guide explains the income types this site is designed to test.
What to use instead
If your tax affairs are outside the UK, use the official guidance for the country where you are registered or resident. If you have both UK and non-UK income, the safest next step is to separate the UK-source figures, then run the MTD checker again for the UK part only. For mixed residence or treaty questions, use professional advice rather than relying on a quick online result.
